We’ve had a rather dull and boring winter this year, with very little snow, and not much to do outdoors. To liven things up a bit, we decided on taking the family on a mid-winter road trip to Michigan. This was the boy’s first road trip, and we had an action-packed long weekend! We headed north on Friday, and landed in Grand Rapids around 3:00 pm. First order of business was to hit the hotel pool…
The boys had a blast, and spent many hours in the pool over the weekend. They came home knowing how to swim the length of the pool, treading water, learning to float, and with red eyes from so much time in the pool!
Next on the agenda was to celebrate Jillian’s 26th birthday. We’ve missed having Jillian and Aaron living close by, so spending the weekend with them was great! Janet, Isaac and Micah also made the trip down from Traverse City, so we had double the fun!
It’s been quite a year for Jillian…she got a new job, moved to Michigan, completed her Masters Degree, got pregnant, and is in the process of moving to a new house next month! Happy Birthday girl!!
Pizza and birthday cake, followed by another round in the pool! On Saturday, after yet another 3 hours in the pool, we all headed over to Holland, MI to give the boys a glimpse of Lake Michigan. It was very windy, and super cold, so we ran to the shore, snapped some quick pics, and then headed to Froggy’s for lunch. We found that the boys aren’t great tourists, but would rather have been swimming than looking at the lake

Later on Saturday, we went to the Grand Rapids Griffin’s hockey game. It was a blast with all kinds of gimmicks going on throughout the game!

On Sunday we headed to Chapel Pointe Church for worship, then on to Jill and Aaron’s apartment for lunch. We headed downtown after lunch for a glorious time of skating on the outdoor pond. I loved it the most, having grown up on a lake and skating every winter day of my life! It was fun to see the boys get the knack of skating too!

Of course, another round in the swimming pool followed, and then again on Monday morning! We hauled the water-logged boys home on Monday morning for a quick dose of reality: Homework and Basketball practice! All in all, it was a great get-away, and we hope to do many more when the weather gets warm. Western Michigan is a great place to visit, and we loved spending time with two of our girls there! I would say our first road trip with the guys was a big success!

It looks and sounds like a great weekend. Mom Hawkins
